Medicare Basics What You Need to Know
Date: 5/6/2025

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people 65 and older, and for some younger individuals with disabilities. It helps cover many healthcare costs-but it's not always simple to understand. Here's a quick breakdown of the basics:

The Four Parts of Medicare:

- Part A - Hospital Insurance

Covers inpatient care, skilled nursing facilities, hospice, and some home health care. Most people don't pay a premium for this.

- Part B - Medical Insurance

Covers doctors visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and durable medical equipment. You pay a monthly premium for Part B.

- Part C - Medicare Advantage

Offered by private insurance companies, these all-in-one plans include Parts A and B, and often Part D. They may include extra benefits like dental vision, or hearing.

- Part D - Prescription Drug Coverage

Helps pay for your medications. Plans are offered by private insurers and vary in cost and coverage.

What Medicare Doesn't Cover:

  1. Long-term care
  2. Dental, vision, and hearing (in Original Medicare)
  3. Most care outside the U.S.

That's why many people choose to add a supplement plan (Medigap) or enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan to get more complete coverage
